Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris France to British parents Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson who were both lawyers. When she moved to Oxfordshire when she was five, Emma attended the Dragon School. Emma was six years old when she made the decision to pursue a career as an actress. She studied for a number of years in Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a Part-time theatre school located in Oxford in which she learned acting as well as singing. The actress had performed in several Stagecoach and school productions by the time she was 10 years old. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2000) was the film adaptation of J.K. Rowlings bestselling novel was cast for the first time at the beginning of 1999. Emma was found by casting agents through Emma's Oxford theatre teacher. David Heyman announced to Emma that after eight consecutive auditions Emma and Rupert Grint were chosen as Hermione and Harry Potter. Emma's film debut came with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2002). The film was also the most successful film during 2001. Opening days and weekends of the sales were record breaking. The film was praised by critics who praised the film and particularly the young performers. The highly distributed British publication The Daily Telegraph called her performance admirable. Emma got five nominations in recognition of her outstanding performance. Then, she was awarded the Young Artist Award in Leading Young Actress of the Film.
